The basic path that winds through the middle of the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest is now a single of the most popular sights in Kyoto. No one knows when the forest dates from, but the nearby Tenryu-Ji Temple dates back to the 14th century when bamboo surrounded temples in Japan to ward off evil spirits.
